Engineered Timber

Posted on April 27, 2016 at 5:25 am

What is Engineered timber? For those of you who do not know much about engineered timber here is a quick explanation. Our Engineered timber is laminated plywood with a veneer of Oak on top. Here a picture so you can understand a bit better: So, what's a plywood? Plywood is produced by assembling wood veneers taken from eucalyptus and birch. Essentially, we bond them together, layer upon layer or  "cross-orienting" with a structural adhesive. By cross orienting the ply layers, it increases the overall strength, suppresses warping while offering just enough flex to let the timber naturally adjust as needed. How does this make engineered timber better? This laminated structure disperses strength effectively, resulting in an increase of the strength and stiffness of the engineered timber compared with solid timber from the same resource. Moreover, this laminated structure resists changing ambiance conditions such as moisture and heat. Consequently, the top tim.......Read More >>

Why timber stains differently?

Posted on April 13, 2016 at 5:34 am

At Oslek flooring we use the best imported European oak. As you might know, we are an environmental friendly company. Therefore, even though we use different species of Oak, our promise is towards sustainability and we use a non threatened species known as Quercus robur L. (in Latin Quercus = oak and  robur = strong timber). Quercus robur is native of Asia minor, north Africa, the Caucasus and Europe. This species are a long lived trees meaning that they can reach up to 12m heigh, producing a long - lasting and durable heartwood. Moreover, it has an appealing grain marking, most when quarter sawn, and is characterised by having dark and light growth rings which makes it very attractive for flooring use. We also display Australian oak, noted for its vigorous luxuriant growth, it can reach up to 20m and its trunk and branches are very thick and solid. Lets get into the composition of timber! The chemical composition of wood depends not only on the species but also the tree p.......Read More >>

How to take care of your engineered flooring

Posted on March 3, 2016 at 12:45 am

Floor surface clear

One of the most frequently asked questions by our costumers is how to take care of their new engineered flooring to keep the wood surface as good as new forever. As our aim is to provide you with the best timber surface for your flooring, we are very happy to share some tips! Regular Cleaning of your Timber Flooring Raw- European Oak Regular cleaning is necessary in order to keep your engineered flooring in the best conditions. As general care, we advise to use an electrostatic mop or a vacuum with a smooth head for removing the dust. Simple and effective! For a better result, we recommend using a swivel-type-cleaning pad, a dry electrostatic pad and a wet microfiber pad. It is also recommended to use specific cleaners for engineered flooring (we love Fiddes Floor Surface Cleaner) which help to keep the wooden surface of the flooring clean, to remove any marks and to collect any missed grit. Never use bleach, ammonia or caustic based cleaner. Why timber flooring is the best choice

Posted on February 10, 2016 at 3:33 am

Fallingwater,_also_known_as_the_Edgar_J._Kaufmann,_Sr.,_residence,_Pennsylvania,_by_Carol_M._Highsmith

Choosing a floor is never easy, it will be the base of our home. The first question we should ask ourselves while building or redecorating our house is about what kind of surface we would like to step on every morning when we leave our beds to start a new day. Every kind of flooring has its benefits, but there is only one kind that can bring a piece of nature to our homes; I am talking about timber flooring, of course! “Love nature, stay close to nature.” With those words Frank Lloyd Wright, one of the best architects of the XX century, encouraged people to use timber to decorate and build their homes. He was a great supporter of the use of timber in the construction and decoration of houses; he valued timber as a construction material, as it is easy to obtain and doesn't need huge processes or complicated methods of production to emphasize its beauty and qualities. From an energetic point of view, timber flooring helps to have a more efficient house, because it is a great the.......Read More >>

The different techniques to producing timber products from logs and the benefits of each.

sawns

Clients often ask us why our timber flooring looks so different from furniture or doors. They are often quite interested in the texture and the grain structure of the timber. So we thought we could spend a bit of more time and explain the different cuts of the wood and how this can lead to a change of appearance. Plain or Back Sawn Best for flooring This is the most common sawn, especially in flooring. In the plain sawn, the annual rings are generally 30 degrees or less to the face of the board. The resulting wood of this sawn displays amazing shapes on the faces of the board because the annual rings are brought out completely, especially in Oak boards where we can easily notice the amazing cathedral graining. Plain sawn allows the creation of bigger and wider boards, so it's just perfect for flooring!  Quarter Sawn Most common cut in Australia The result of this sawn is a very straight grain pattern. This sawing is a bit more complicated than the plain because the log is q.......Read More >>

Oslek Mitcham Warehouse Front

OSLEK FLOORING HAS RE-LOCATED! I am pleased to announce that we have re-located to our new headquarter at 18 Monomeeth Drive, Mitcham, 3132. For those of you who may already know, we have been busy moving out of our old headquarter in Nunawading for the last few months. We would like to thank you all for your patience while we were going through this busy transition. The front entrances offers more car parks and container space.  The main reason behind the move was to do with the inconvenience of having two separate warehouses in Nunawading. Having to move the amount of stock we had became ever more so difficult. Other big projects such as the Australian Oak and local manufacturing restricted the amount of space we had. Therefore it became clear to us that in order to further grow our company we had to move to a larger location. We made sure our new open office felt warm as our clients enters through the front door.  Although it has been fantastic to move to a.......Read More >>

Australian Vic Ash Oak Timber Floorboard

We are proud to announce our partnership with Australian Sustainable Hardwoods (ASH) in creating their mill's first engineered wide Australian Oak flooring product. The Heyfield operation has Australia's largest hardwood sawmill, processing 155,000 cubic metres of Australian Oak, also known as Victorian Ash, a year. We have made sure that the natural character of the Australian Oak is unchanged so only a natural coating has been applied to our first version of the wide engineered board shown above. Australian Oak has that clean, blonde appearance giving it that distinct 'Aussie' feel. Gone are the days where clients would have to choose between European engineered wide oak boards or solid Australian timber. This product now offers both and is perfect for clients who are environmentally conscious and at the same time want that Australian timber feel and look in their homes. Like our European Oak range, the construction of the Australian Oak is identical with the use of cross sectioned m.......Read More >>

The Great Wall of Timber Oak Flooring!

The Great Wall of Oak

The rise of the feature wall! While most businesses were enjoying a well deserved break over the Christmas and new year period, Tait and Oslek were already planning the new year ahead. We decided that feature walls was becoming the way of the future and what better example to set than doing it ourselves. A big thank you to Tait Flooring and their team for offering their showroom to erect the 'Great Wall of Timber Oak Flooring'. For now, lets just call it the 'Great Wall of Tait'! As you can see the picture above, we decided it was enough to show off 2 boards of each colour and have it all 'hung' on the wall like picture frames. The continuous flow of the 'Great Wall' matched perfectly with the oak boards on the floor. No one doubted that the original 'empty' wall looked fantastic and created a much spacious area for the showroom, however with the new wall cladding now up, it will definitely be the centre piece of the whole room. The 'wow' effect of feature walls [caption id="att.......Read More >>

Hot Timber Flooring Trends for 2015

Posted on December 10, 2014 at 3:43 am

flooring-trends

What are some of the hot new flooring trends in 2015? We are seeing a trend in sales towards wide board oak flooring, more specifically rustic and featured boards. These boards are generally wire-brushed and contain a high degree of knots and feature grain. These boards have a reclaimed look that mimics old wooden floors salvaged from abandoned farms and warehouses. We can use many techniques to achieve this look including, hand scraping, wire-brushing and colouring the boards with fuming products which reacts with the natural timber. This gives the wood an aged look by the various grey and natural tones that permeate through the tight knots and open grains. Antique or crushed bevels have also been used to promote the aged worn look. There is a trend towards using these timbers in the shop fitting industry, restaurants, cafes and retail stores. They use these colour tones to adorn the walls and ceilings to promote a warm, inviting feel that makes their patrons want to linger in their .......Read More >>

How timber flooring will increase the value of your house

Posted on November 5, 2014 at 4:57 am

increase house value with timber flooring kitchen

As a manufacturer, we have noticed that it’s getting harder and harder to acquire raw material. Many countries such as China and Russia are more cautious about cutting trees down due to lack of regulations in the past. As we are always encouraging governments around the world to enforce better logging practices and regulation, we make sure that we also take responsibility in how we manufacture our timber flooring. One good example is how our factory will only manufacture engineered floors. Not only is it much more stable than solid flooring, it is a much more sustainable practice. By using less of the oak tree, we are able to manufacture more floorboards from a single log. Offcuts or the waste of a log are also recycled so it can be used as plywood. Timber costs will continue to rise It’s also important to note that as global timber demand continues to grow and supply is still limited, it's inevitable that the value of timber material will increase over time. World population con.......Read More >>
